Dynamic Careers in Aquaculture (DCA) brings together middle school students of diverse backgrounds to reduce isolation, enhance multicultural understanding, improve academic performance, and acquaint students with career pathways in the field of aquaculture. Through an in-depth hands-on study of the waters of Long Island Sound students will be provided an overview of its biological/physical character and its economic and cultural impact on the state through time, and its value and importance as Connecticut’s most valuable natural resource. This fundamental knowledge will allow them to begin their study of the science of aquaculture and its global implications as they assume responsibility for establishing and maintaining various types of aquaculture/ aquaponic/ hydroponic systems to raise/cultivate fin fish, herbs, vegetables and microgreens. Field trips are designed to enhance students’ sense of community and experience the vitality of this evolving industry in Connecticut. DCA is a school year program supplemented with an exciting week-long summer component.
